IMAGINE THERE'S A WORLD...WHERE EVERY ANIMAL HAS A PLACE TO CALL HOME....FOREVER.
MEET SOME OF OUR RESIDENTS!
Bamboo (l) and Bridget (r)
BAMBOO, (affectionately known also as Boo, BoomBoom, and Bamboozle) passed away after a long battle with canine cancer. He was 14 years old. Bamboo was a purebred yellow Lab who was a rescue from Hurricane Katrina. His family bravely stayed at their home in Pas Christian, Miss. and rode out the storm to stay with their dogs. When they came North to relocate, they had three Labs and couldn't find housing that would allow multiple dogs. At the time, Bamboo and his sister, Cotton, were 8 and their dam, Liza Jane was 10. We gladly took Liza Jane and Bamboo. Unfortunately, our sweet and gentle Liza Jane was taken in a 2007 fire at our Sanctuary. On 11.23.2009, Bamboo had to have a tumor removed from his neck. Thank you to ALL who contributed to this costly surgery. Although the biopsy came back as a squamous cell carcinoma, and the prognosis was very good, the tumor returned in a different location in 2011. Rest in peace, BoomBoom, we love you now and always will.
BRIDGET is a Shiba Inu mix who was rescued from a kill shelter after being dumped there with a request for euthanasia by the very people who had been brutalizing her. It took a long time for her to trust people again, and an even longer time for us to be able to touch different parts of her body. Born in July, 1997, she is the Queen of the Sanctuary, being our longest term resident to date. She is enjoying a well-deserved retirement in comfort (she takes up most of the bed!) and loves to be pampered in her own way and in her own time :-)

JOSHUA
Joshua - 'Da Man!
JOSHUA - a humongous Black Lab, spent months languishing in a kill shelter, and eventually went cage-crazy. One of our Board Members, a Lab lover of high degree, sprang him from 'jail' and took him home to her Lab mixes and started working with him. She kept him for two years, and worked with him to achieve some level of recovery for him. Forced to relocate by a bad economy, she had trouble finding a place to rent that would allow her to keep more than 2 animals, and we took Joshua into the Sanctuary to live. A big boy (weighing in at about 96 lbs!), he still is haunted by his time in those cages...when stressed, he will run in tight circles (something called "stereotypical behaviour"). This behaviour is uncontrollable, and we have to physically make him stop. We think Josh is about 6-7, maybe more by now, as his age in the pound was uncertain. He is the King of the Big Dog House.
ZERO
ZERO (named after the late, great Zero Mostel) is our longest-term feline resident and he knows he is the King of Cats! Originally tested as FIV+ when he was a kitten, he arrived at 6 months of age. Many people misunderstand Feline ImmunoDeficiency Virus (FIV), and think that it is a death sentence for cats, or that they cannot live a normal, peaceful life with other kitties. Nothing could be further than the truth. Please ask your vet for FULL information on FIV, and check reliable Internet sources for information. At any rate, Zero was tested again, and it turned out he was negative for FIV, however, he stayed in Sanctuary for at that time, we only had two kitties, and the elder kittie, the late Nicholas, was lonesome. The reason for his about-face on the FIV test is this: if a kitten from an FIV+ queen is tested too early in life, they will test a FALSE positive because there are still antibodies present in their blood from mother's milk. When tested after there system(s) clear of milk residue, they may "convert", and remain negative. Zero now watches over his Kitty Kingdom of FIV+ AND FIV- kitties. He is not FIV+ and is going on 8 year young.
RED CLOUD
The stateley and elegant Red Cloud, friend to Feline - and human-kind alike
RED CLOUD was taken into a TNR program (trap-neuter-release) when a feral colony was being trapped. When the vet saw how loving and affectionate he was, he fell in love with him. However, when they found he was FIV+, they knew it was unethical to return this cat to the colony after neutering him. The people conducting the TNR program at that location had heard that we gave Sanctuary to FIV+ cats, and so here he is! He is the Cat Ambassador Deluxe, welcoming new kitties with grace and charm. Red Cloud, (named after the great Oglala Sioux Chieftain known for his sense of justice, peace and for his deep understanding of the world) is a lover of all, and he is loved by all. You will often find him in a kittie-hug with another cat, or engaged in an intense grooming session with one of his feline pals, male or female. We do not know his exact age, but when he arrived, the vet guessed him at between 5-7 years old. That was, er, approximately 4 years ago...
Beloved Bear
BELOVED BEAR:
Bear was one of four dogs whose human Mommy crossed over the Rainbow Bridge...the oldest dog was 14 years old and we offered to take her, but amazingly she had been adopted! In fact, as the youngest (10 years old when he came to live with us 2 years ago), he was the ONLY dog who had not been adopted. He's adorable and quite the demanding little fellow and we adore him endlessly. Ain't he too cute?

BUSTER BROWNE
This is the inimitable BUSTER BROWNE! As you can see from his, er, modest pose, he is a true believer in SPAY/NEUTER! Also known as Browne the Clown, he is quite the little man - and ever the goof, the class cut-up...you know the type. He is a Pug and Jack Russell Terrier mix (a "juggle"?) rescued from a kill shelter. When things get tough, the Clown gets us going.

Shayna
SHAYNA was essentially a "feral" pup, born to a family who let their female breed willy-nilly, and they were living loose around the house, and taking shelter from the elements inside a falling-down shed with loads of rusted metal trash inside. The mother "disappeared" as we were told, and we met Shayna and her littermates when they were about 3 months old, running loose near a very busy road! We spoke the family, and brought over a kennel run, which was erected around the "shed". Then, because we were full, we asked a local no-kill shelter to take the pups. Away they went when they were about 7 months old (it took that long to get the people to surrender the pups!) Alas, Shayna was fairing poorly in the kennel environment, so we took her back to WHSInc. She has been a shining star for us here, and she is a dear love. Shayna is now about 7 years old. Her special needs (excessive timidity, fear of unknown things), made her one of our permanent residents.
SONNY
SONNY had a family that loved him very much, but didn't have alot of time for him, and realized it was unfair to keep him, a beagle, crated for so many hours a day. He found his way here, and as you can see, he is verrrry comfortable! He still prefers his crate, but when he wants to lie around and play King of the Castle, well, he gets his wish.
MOCHA
This is MOCHA, who came to us from a kill shelter in NJ when he was approximately 7 years old. Seems he was too old, or not "pretty" enough to get adopted and the "clock" at the shelter had run out for him. We think he is a Choc. Lab and Dobie mix. A sweet, sweet soul, Mocha is truly one of our angelic delights. They don't come much better than him! He loves to run and play catch...he just likes to keep his catch, and then have you chase him around the yard to get it back! His opinion is if he has to fetch, you have to get your exercise as well - lol.
CHANDLER
Meet CHANDLER! Chandler (aka ChandyCandy, Chandel, Chuckles) came here as a behavioural problem dog, having had several severe bites on his record with his family. Finally, after 6 years of this, the Matriarch of the family decided it was Chandler, or her...what was her husband, who was (and still is)so deeply in love with Chandy, to do? His two options, due to Chandel's bite record was euthanasia, or find a place that would take a "bite" dog and rehab him (not many of those around these days). We said we would try but without guarantees, as his issues were indeed severe. Now, Chandler is a member of the Sanctuary family. He has his own place in the house (it used to be our dining room...sigh) that he can call his own, because he doesn't get along with the other dogs on their turf (the rest of the house ground floor), although they can go in and visit him and he is fine with that. Go figure. We've had a tough road with Chandler, and thought we would have to euthanize him on several occasions, but we love him despite his psychological lumps and bumps. MORAL: Chandler was purchased from a well-known "kennel" on Long Island and we believe he was their attempt at a first breeding of a GoldenDoodle. He was sold as a "Curly coated Golden" (huh?). Obviously, the breeding was not of the soundest dogs. Further this kennel has been known to buy from puppy mills, so all in all, the moral is DON'T SHOP - ADOPT, unless you know your 'breeder' really really well. Further, Chandler is proof that dogs with behavioural issues CAN be healed...with time, love and patience.
SAM I AM
SAM
Sam was kenneled at his vet's office in GA while the family found a new place to live after they were foreclosed on. They never came back. His vet, very kind and compassionate, kept Sam for over a year before deciding that Sam really needed to go. WHSInc. was apporached, and we said 'sure - bring him up'. He was 9 years old at that time. A Treeing Walker Coonhound, Sam is surprisingly quiet for a hounddogie - in fact, most of them are, until there is a reason to be noisy! So dismiss from your mind the myths about Hounds, because that is the main reason they die in high-kill Southern rural shelters (in part, anyway). In fact, Hounds make deeply devoted and loyal companions who want nothing more than to be with their human companions - on leash of course (after all, they ARE scenthounds...one whiff of game, and whoosh - you'll be bailing them out of doggie jail!) Sam is a joy to live with. He is now 11-12 years of age, but you'd never know it escept for a bit more white in his muzzle.

MARGARET
MARGARET was surrendered to WHSInc. by a famliy that didn't have time for her. But they DID have time for their little Maltese! She was young when she came in, but she sure weedled her way into our hearts. A very demanding lady, she was actually "titled" as Captain Margaret. But to us she is, and will always be, Queen Margaret aka 'Margaret the Mouth'. She knows her own mind and never misses a chance to speak her mind as well!
MR. BIGGLESWORTH
MR. BIGGLESWORTH(we did NOT name him) came from a local shelter. He was unhappy even in their cozy cat room, and would only come out at night as he hated other cats. He was starving himself as well. So, here he is! AKA BIGGS, he has plenty of CATitude! He came here and had no choice but to live with the other cats here, and over time he has adjusted quite well. He still can be snarky about things, but he's loving dear kitteh whose people had suddenly become 'allergic' to him after 9 years! (A common excuse for dumping an animal companion). He is now going on 13, and spreading his own brand of kitteh-ness around our Sanctuary! ALL HAIL BIGGLES! With regret, we had to say goodbye to Mr. Biggles this September. He (and his catitude) are sorely missed. RIP Mr. Biggs. We will see you again at the Bridge.
RANGER
RANGER is our newest resident. He arrived on Monday, Memorial Day 2011, via three airplane rides from Memphis TN to upstate NY, thanks to PILOTSnPAWS! A Malinois Shepherd, he was literally saved from the Kill Room at the notorious Memphis Animal Shelter (MAS) in the city that is home of the Blues. With a kill rate of 77%, MAS doesn't even allow more than 50% of its animals who are held in the "stray hold" area to be seen by the public, let alone get adopted. Only a lucky few make it onto the adoption floor. RANGER was NOT one of the lucky few. He started exhibiting stereotypical behaviour and self-mutilating, so he was put on the kill list. Shame isn't it? Beautiful boy like him? Malinois are known for their high work drive and do not fare well in kenneled environments. THANKS TO ALL THE READERS OF YESBISCUIT.COM who came to the aid of this furbabe and helped us get him out of hell. At only about 8 months of age when rescued, he did not deserve to be killed. Not that ANY animals deserve to be killed in a 'shelter'. RANGER will be worked with and trained and although we have tried to get him into a work program such as SAR or Canines in Conservation, all those programs were full, so he is here to stay and doing might fine! (PILOTSnPAWS is an all-volunteer group of private and sometimes commercial air pilots who donate all of their time, fuel and love, to ferry rescued animals to their new destinations, and their new lives, in record time which is perfect for special needs animals. Let's hear it for our FLYBOYS and FLYGIRLS!!!!!!!)
FOXY
FOXY is a 13-14 year old Pomeranian who had to be surrendered because her human parents were having another baby. BUT WAIT! Before you raise your eyebrows and say "oh not THAT old one again!", let me tell you about this young couple. They found Foxy on the streets and took her in and had her for many years of love. She was their FIRST baby. Then they had their first human baby, prematurely. Now, with a second difficult pregnancy, and being confined to bed rest for a long period due to complications, this young couple drove all the way from the Bronx to avoid having to either euthanize Foxy or enter her into the NYCACC system (equal fates IMHO). The day they brough Foxy, they brought a folder FULL of every single record since the day they found her; all of her favorite things; her food etc. And they cried. They wept. These people really LOVE this little girl. So while it easy to make snap judgments about peoples' motives, you never really know until you have walked a mile in their paws. FOXY's age is beginning to catch up with her, as she it totally deaf and blind. But she is doing fine in her little soft-sided crib and supervised walk-abouts in the house. We hope she'll be with us for a long time yet to come. And she still retains her POMITUDE!!! Atta girl!
Cute Vanderbilt
Cute Vanderbilt:
Vanderbilt was saved from a southern-states high-kill shelter, where he was about to be killed because nobody wanted a dog who was blind in one eye. Vanderbilt is a silly boy, and must have had little to no training as a small pup. He arrived here at about 19 months old after being treated for heartworm. After NINE whole months, Vandy found his forever home with a great family that is active, loves to hike and camp and do other outdoorsy activities - right up Vandy's alley! We are so thankful and happy that Vandy has found his happiness - forever!
